It has already been one year since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The geopolitical and military dimensions that have captivated the world in this conflict pale in comparison with the human cost of this war.

This invasion has caused the people of Ukraine immense suffering. Millions had to flee their homes and become refugees either in bordering countries or internally within Ukraine. Several cities and towns were reduced to rubble, leaving thousands of civilians shelter-less and without basic things. The psychological trauma being inflicted on the people who have faced the horrors of this war is just beyond measure.

By day, the humanitarian situation in Ukraine continued to worsen. Shortages of food, lack of access to health care, and destruction of essential infrastructure took a dire turn in living conditions for millions. Children lost years of education, and too many lives were taken.

Besides, the invasion brought a strategic turn in the global economy. Sanctions against Russia have disrupted supply chains, pushing up energy, food, and other commodity prices. The War has accentuated global food insecurity-most, particularly for those regions of the world that are dependent upon Ukraine and Russia for grain exports.

In the worst case, the international community will have to maintain its commitment to humanitarian assistance for the people of Ukraine through continued conflict. It must be ensured that no civilian gets hurt, and those responsible for every war crime are taken to the courts of justice. The human toll in this war is just too great to be left unattended.
